Morning Keynote Address:
Hamilton O. Smith, M.D.
"Building a Synthetic Cell"

Hamilton Smith is Scientific Director of Synthetic Biology and Bioenergy at the J. Craig Venter Institute and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Medicine at UCSD. In 1968, he discovered the first Type II restriction enzyme (HindII) and determined the sequence of its cleavage site. In, 1978 he was a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Medicine for this discovery. In the 1990s, he collaborated with The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) to sequence H. influenzae , the first completely sequenced free-living organism. In 1998, he joined Celera Genomics Corporation where he participated in the sequencing of the Drosophila and human genomes. He left Celera to join the newly launched J. Craig Venter Institute where he is currently leading the synthetic biology and biological energy groups. more

Steve Warren Dr. Warren is the William Patterson Timmie Professor of Human Genetics at Emory, where he is also Professor of Biochemistry, Professor of Pediatrics and Professor in the Winship Cancer Institute and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. In addition to his profound research impact, Steve's distinguished service to the scientific community has been enormous. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Human Genetics, as President of the American Society of Human Genetics, as a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors for NIMH, and is the founding Chairman of the Department of Human Genetics at Emory. Among numerous awards and honors, Steve has been recognized as an inaugural inductee to the NIDCHD Hall of Honor, and has received the William Allen Award from the American Society for Human Genetics, the William Rosen Award from the National Fragile X Foundation, and election to the National Institute of Medicine. more
